What is terpene separation in cannabis extraction?

Terpene separation is the deliberate collection of volatile aromatic compounds — terpenes — before or during solvent recovery and distillation, so they can be preserved and reintroduced into a finished extract. Because terpenes evaporate readily at the temperatures used in post-processing, a dedicated cold condenser or trap intercepts them as a separate fraction rather than allowing them to escape as vapor. The goal is to retain the aromatic and potentially bioactive terpene profile of the starting plant material in the finished product.

Why are terpenes lost during extraction and distillation?

Terpenes have low boiling points and high vapor pressures relative to cannabinoids, which means they transition from liquid to gas at relatively modest temperatures. During solvent recovery, the heat applied to evaporate the hydrocarbon or ethanol solvent also volatilizes terpenes, carrying them off with the solvent vapor unless a cold condenser intercepts them. During distillation, they appear early in the heads fraction and are often discarded unless the still is configured to collect them separately.

What is the difference between live resin and full-spectrum extract?

Live resin refers specifically to an extract made from fresh-frozen biomass that was never dried or cured, preserving the terpene profile of the living plant at harvest. Full-spectrum extract is a broader term indicating that the product retains the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes present in the starting material, regardless of whether the biomass was fresh-frozen or dried. Both categories benefit from terpene capture techniques, but live resin starts with a higher terpene load because fresh-frozen material has not lost volatiles to the drying and curing process.

Does running colder hydrocarbon extraction improve terpene yield?

Yes, lower solvent temperatures improve both terpene preservation and extract selectivity. Cold hydrocarbon solvents suppress terpene volatility, keeping more of the aromatic fraction in solution through the extraction step rather than allowing it to off-gas. Cold extraction also reduces co-extraction of unwanted plant waxes and chlorophyll, so the crude entering post-processing is already richer in terpenes and cannabinoids relative to non-target compounds. Propane blends, which allow even colder operating conditions than straight butane, are particularly favored by producers targeting terpene-rich live resin.

Can terpenes captured during processing be safely reintroduced into distillate?

Yes, and this is a common practice for producing full-spectrum distillate products. Terpene fractions collected during solvent recovery or distillation are typically tested for potency and purity, then blended back into refined distillate at controlled ratios. The result is a distillate that carries a defined terpene profile rather than the nearly odorless, flavorless character of stripped distillate. Proper cold storage under an inert atmosphere between collection and recombination is essential to prevent oxidation and terpene degradation.
