When do extraction operations usually hit their first scaling problems?

Most operations hit their first real challenges in the growth phase, around 100–500 lbs/day, when parallel extraction capacity, dedicated distillation, and automated solvent recovery all become necessary at once. Planning for that transition early is cheaper than reacting to it.

What metrics should I track while scaling?

Cost per gram of extract, yield percentage from biomass, and product consistency scores. These three tell you whether added capacity is actually improving the economics or just increasing volume.

What are the most common scaling mistakes?

Buying too big too fast, ignoring documentation until it is urgent, underestimating how quickly power, water, and HVAC requirements grow, and skipping operator training. Right-sized equipment plus an early quality system avoids most of them.

What changes at enterprise scale?

Enterprise operations (500+ lbs/day) run multiple extraction lines simultaneously, add continuous-flow processing where applicable, and move to full automation with SCADA/HMI controls. Compliance expectations rise in step, including comprehensive environmental controls and audit-ready documentation.

How important are SOPs and batch tracking during growth?

Critical — the growth phase is exactly when informal processes stop working. Implement SOPs for every process step, introduce batch tracking and a LIMS, and standardize quality testing protocols before volume makes retrofitting painful.
