What is the difference between distillate and isolate?

Distillate is a refined cannabinoid oil produced by thermal distillation under vacuum, typically containing a broad spectrum of cannabinoids and achieving high potency as a liquid or semi-solid oil. Isolate is a single purified cannabinoid — such as THCA or CBD — crystallized out of solution into a solid, powdery or crystalline form. Distillate retains more of the extract's character, while isolate represents the highest achievable purity for a single compound.

Can you make isolate directly from crude extract without distillation?

Yes, in some workflows — particularly for CBD isolate from hemp — crystallization can be applied directly to a winterized, decolorized crude without a full distillation pass first. However, distilling first concentrates the target cannabinoid and removes impurities that would otherwise co-precipitate, which generally yields cleaner crystals and a higher-purity isolate. For most operations, distillation before crystallization produces more consistent results.

Why does crumble have a different texture than shatter or oil?

Texture in hydrocarbon concentrates is determined by how the crude is purged. Shatter forms when the oil is spread thinly, purged at lower temperatures without agitation, and cooled slowly into a glassy matrix. Crumble results from agitation, whipping, or temperature cycling during the purge, which disrupts the molecular alignment and causes the extract to form small, aerated structures. The starting material and solvent are the same; the texture difference is entirely a function of purge parameters.

Is distillate suitable for dabbing?

Distillate can technically be dabbed, but its viscosity and neutral flavor profile make it less popular for that application compared to live resin, rosin, or crumble. Most distillate is consumed via vape cartridges or used as an infusion ingredient in edibles and tinctures, where its neutral taste and consistent potency are advantages. Concentrate consumers who dab generally prefer products that retain terpenes and the broader cannabinoid spectrum.

What throughput should I plan for if running a dedicated distillation operation?

Throughput planning depends on your upstream extraction volume and downstream demand. Decimal's [30.TF](/equipment/30tf) is rated for an input of 25 litres of distillate per hour, making it appropriate for operations running one or two extraction shifts per day. The [80.TF](/equipment/80tf) accepts an automated feed of over 50 L/hr and is better suited to facilities running continuous production or aggregating crude from multiple extractors.
